Meetings Page Updated E-Mail To A Friend | Print Article
The meeting page now has a new look to it - check it out. This new page is now database drive and will automatically update itself after each meeting. This will allow us to keep our site up to date without having to remember to manually update it each month. I am going to add some more neat features to that in the near future, as well as add the next meeting topic to the left side of the page so that members and visitors will always be able to see the next meeting topic from any page in the site. See you all at the December meeting, and remember, the flat panel is mine!

Welcome to our New Web Site E-Mail To A Friend | Print Article
Shane Lambert, LCPC PresidentI wanted to take a minute to welcome everyone to our brand new web site. In an attempt to make this site more informative, I have taken it upon myself to post relevent news from the computer industry on the home page, rather than the musty old photo we had before. Of course, if we ever get a new photo, we could put that back on the site.

For now, I plan to update this page with news I get that I feel is important for the members to have. We'll start this with some news about Freeware Adware/Spyware programs, which of course may seem to be a bit one sided as it comes from Webroot, but it really is true. I have seen first hand that SpySweeper can find things that neither AdAware or Spybot can't find, but none that either of those find that SpySweeper doesn't. Yes, SpySweeper is not free, but in my opinion it is well worth the cost.

Of course, I don't want this to just be a one sided deal. If you have news that you think is important and the group should know about it, just let me know. I can and will add anything that is important, and if anyone is interested, I can give you access to post your own news column on the web site. Together, by making this a collaborative effort, we can really make our web site a place to call home.

Freeware can't keep up. E-Mail To A Friend | Print Article
Richard Shannon, Webroot Vice President of Threat ResearchFree anti-spyware programs just don't cut it. Designed to stop pop-up ads in the early days of adware, these free programs lack the technical capabilities to keep pace as the spyware problems continues to grow.

Only commercial anti-spyware programs, like Spy Sweeper, have been able to invest in the manpower and technology needed to fight spyware writers. Spyware writers use unique packaging and file encryption to make their unwanted programs hard to detect and even harder to remove. Free products are unable to find these particularly nasty programs and leave end users with a false sense of security.

Active users of the Internet, those most prone to infection, rely on commercial products to eradicate spyware because the free anti-spyware programs just don't offer the level of protection needed.
